If it is going to be peaking at 6:30 pm, I don't see why it would be so bright as to burn out sensor pixels. I have shot into the FULL sun at that time of day without any damage to my camera.

Indeed like I noted, I too am suspicious, but then every site speaking with authority on the issue recommends STRONG filters and not looking directly at it with eyes. I'd bet it is more a least common denominator issue that is dumbed down to an extremes lest fools and ignorant get into trouble. Because fear that some clueless person regardless of how they might narrowly relate what is ok, might take any thumbs up as a signal to looks directly at the sun or use their camera well before it is only 94%. No doubt many will only be aware an eclipse is going to occur on the day of the eclipse due to buzz that day from others. So they will trot out with their friends clueless about what is happening, as to how much the moon might hide the sun, or what manner of viewing is ok. And then there are myriad little kids that need guidance from adults.

Last thing someone making recommendations is going to want to hear is that just because they said it was ok ONLY if one was located in a place with over 90% occlusion, that some kids damaged their eyes because someone else said it would be ok who didn't remember the qualifications. Or someone burns out their $2000 DSLR because they didn't remember they could only point their camera directly at the sun if stopped down below F11.

Staring at an eclipse is probably no more dangerous than staring at a full sun. That however still happens to be rather dangerous.

I remember staring at a partial eclipse once. I went and got special eclipse filter glasses, and it pretty much looked like a light spot against almost pure black. It was pretty much the equivalent of a welder's glass.

Half Dome from Glacier Point - 3D

I took 3 sets of images from Taft Point to make stereo pairs but the result was I couldn't get far enough part to get the best stereo effect. My best result is this 3D image of Half Dome from Glacier Point. I took a series of image from the amphitheater to the point itself. This time I had another problem: the extreme difference in distance between the area west of Half Dome and the farthest mountains. Too little separation and there's not enough 3D and too much separation and you can't view the background because of position shifts relative to Half Dome. This image is a compromise. It is possible to view all parts of the image in 3D but it takes a lot of shifting focus to do it. There's also a problem with the Diving Board caused by the sharp cutoff and abrupt change in distance behind it. It looks best on my display if I view from about 24" away. The strange blacked out areas are there to eliminate unviewable parts of the image in the foreground. The spacing between images is greater in the foreground than in the background which results in one of the pair missing at the edges. I have a better idea now of what scenes will work the best and how to do it.

If you picked up Nat'l Geo Trails Illustrated Maps #'s 308 & 309 they would cover everywhere you are talking about and much more. These provide trails, mileages, topography details, plus camping-vs-no camping zones.

A word on Sunrise Lakes. The most photogenic one (in my opinion) is the lower one and the most secluded is the middle one because it's actually off-trail (you have to walk through the woods slightly to find it). As for Lower Cathedral Lake I would recommend camping on the ledges on the north side (avoid the meadow like the plague--mosquito heaven).

On your 2nd day I too would recommend making it a little more interesting by going left off-trail about a mile above Upper Cathedral Lake to Echo Lake and south through the trees on the RH side of the creek where you will eventually intersect the trail that goes to Merced Lake. Turn right onto this trail which takes you back up to Long Meadow and turn left when you reach the JMT. This takes you to the Sunrise HSC on your way to Sunrise Lakes.

As for snakes, the Pacific Rattler is seldom seen and for the most part very docile. You would have to basically step on one or stick your hand into a crevice where is does not belong to get bitten. They keep to themselves and have no real interest in bothering people. Your odds of getting injured by a mule deer is greater than getting bitten by a snake in Yosemite.

But will they let me add ppl since the day we're starting @Cathedral still has openings, or will they say no since the June 5th spots are all reserved?
National Park Service Offers Free Entrance Passes to All Active Duty United States Military Members and Dependents

National Park Service Offers Free Entrance Passes to All Active Duty United States Military Members and Dependents - news release
Yosemite National Park Participating in Agency Wide Program
Scott Gediman 209-372-0248
Kari Cobb 209-372-0529

To show appreciation for those who serve in the United States (U.S) Military, the National Park Service (NPS) will begin issuing an annual pass offering free entrance to all 397 national parks for active duty military members and their dependents. The annual pass will be offered for the first time beginning Saturday, May 19, 2012, which is Armed Forces Day.

“We all owe a debt to those who sacrifice so much to protect our country,” said Yosemite National Park Superintendent, Don Neubacher. “We are proud to recognize these brave men and women and hope that a visit to this or any national park will offer an opportunity to unwind, relax, rejuvenate, and just have fun with their families.”

Active duty members of the U.S. Military and their dependents can pick up their pass at any of the five entrance stations to Yosemite National Park. Military members and dependents must show a current, valid military identification card to obtain their pass. More information is available at http://www.nps.gov/findapark/passes.htm .

This military version of the America the Beautiful National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass also permits free entrance to sites managed by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, the Bureau of Land Management, the Bureau of Reclamation, and the U.S. Forest Service. The pass is also available at these locations.

“Through the years, military members, especially those far from home in times of conflict, have found inspiration in America’s patriotic icons and majestic landscapes, places like the Statue of Liberty and the Grand Canyon that are cared for by the National Park Service and symbolize the nation that their sacrifices protect,” said National Park Service Director Jonathan B. Jarvis. “This new pass is a way to thank military members and their families for their service and their sacrifices.”

National parks and the military have strong ties going back to the establishment of Yellowstone as the world’s first national park in 1872. The U.S. Cavalry watched over America’s national parks and did double duty, serving as the first park rangers until the National Park Service was created 44 years later. During World War II, many parks were set aside for the training and care of military personnel. Today, dozens of national parks commemorate military battles and achievements.

Wawona Northwest Prescribed Fire Project has been postponed indefinitely

The 846 acre Wawona Northwest Prescribed Fire, that began on May 15, 2012, has been postponed. Fire officials cancelled the project due to concerns for safety to firefighters and the community, and an unsettled weather pattern. A high pressure ridge over the Sierra Nevada is projected for the weekend and may not have allowed enough time to complete the project.

This project is one of the most difficult prescribed fires units within the park due to very steep terrain, with a 2300’ elevation gain. The decision to cancel the project weighed on adequate planning, evaluation of risk, fire ground situational awareness and availability of adequate resources. This decision process is taken on all fires and up to the minute before ignition begins. The intent of the risk analysis is to reduce the subjectivity in evaluating the suitability of completing every prescribed fire project safely.

Specific to the Wawona project, early drying of vegetation, inadequate resources and concerns by fire managers to hold the fire along fire lines led to the uncertainty of successfully mitigating an escape. The extremely dry winter and early drying of vegetation, points out the importance of property owners to maintain defensible space and clearance of dead and down vegetation within 100 feet of their properties. The Wawona NW project will be considered for a later date this fall or next spring.

For additional Information: Yosemite Fuels and Prescribed Fire Office: Taro_Pusina@nps.gov - (209) 375-9576. I would be very judicious in calling that number.

It's the number they post on the message boards at the entrance of the campgrounds for "after hours" noise problems or any other "after hours" campground problems....it goes to the dispatch office which will deal with non emergency problems (and emergency if you need it, but they recommend 911 for emergencies).

Yes, that's the non-emergency phone number to contact the park's dispatchers. Don't worry about interrupting them from a real emergency. If a real emergency is taking up their time, they won't answer this non-emergency number and your call will go eventually to their voice mail. And if a real emergency call comes in when you're on the phone with them, they'll end your call to handle the 911 call.

Most juridictions have this type of non-emergency phone number to contact their 24/7 communication/dispatch centers.

.

Earlier, officials indicated the report would be released this week.

The 280-page report on the incident is expected to determine whether the Golden Gate National Recreation Area ranger used the proper level of force in dealing with a man who was being uncooperative. Wow! Tire chains as a step? I could not locate in the park a simple stool however. Part of the report was "tongue in cheek" as I intended to suggest that I had interpreted the NPS advisory to "carry chains" literally to mean that all visitors should actually carry chains around. However, they did make a good small step stool.
