FWIW, the best time to retaliate against wasps/yellowjackets is at night when they're all in the nest. A judicious amount of approved spray applied into the nest and they won't be coming out again.

Right after you do the dinner dishes, take the dishpan full of soapy water and pour it down the yellowjacket nest. That will be the end of that nest. I like to put a towel over the nest and pour the water through that just in case any try to come out.
