A friend just called and said that a tractor trailer rig carrying a load of sulpher caught fire a mile or so before the Park entrance.

Chemical spill closes Highway 41 near Fish Camp

A chemical spill closed Highway 41 near Fish Camp on Sunday evening, and hazardous materials crews were headed to Yosemite National Park to clean it up, the California Highway Patrol said.

The spill occurred just before 5 p.m. when a tractor trailer started spilling 25-pound bags of powdered sulfur while driving toward Yosemite, CHP officer Doug Corbett said. In total, 600 bags of sulfur were spilled on the road.

The sulfur sparked a number of small fires on and next to the road, Corbett said.

All of the fires were extinguished, he said, but the highway remained closed Sunday night. Yosemite National Park also closed its Highway 41 gate, the CHP dispatch log said.

Corbett said that agencies involved in the cleanup hoped to have the roadway cleared of all of the sulfur before noon today.

PS - Anyone see/hear the fireball this morning? I didn't see it, but heard it up in Carson Pass this mornng - way cool.

Yes. I live in the middle of Calaveras County and it rocked the house. I went outside and heard a few sputtering type sounds and then it went quiet. I didn't think to look up.

Hey I'll admit to being initially confused also and needing to scroll up and noticed the "P.S."

That would have been quite the truck explosion.

Totally missed the PS.

Today is my first day back to work and I'll try and find out why a truck load of sulphur was headed into the Park.

That's what I was wondering. What would anyone in the park be doing with 600 bags of sulpher?

All I could gather was speculation. Some thought the sulphur was for a marijuana patch, but that's a lot of sulphur and what would it be used for in a marijuana patch? Some thought he might have been trying to go through the Park and out the Big Oak Flat Entrance.

I think the guy was drunk, following his GPS, or just being stupid, and trying to get over Tioga Pass. Maybe he thought that if you don't read the signs you can get through. Either way, he's in trouble and not likely to be driving truck any more.

It could be used for dusting the leaves for pest control.

According to the Fresno Bee, the driver of the truck has been arrested for a DUI.

Also according to the article, all commercial trucks are banned on Hwy 41 north of Hwy 145.

If commercial trucking is banned north of that highway, how do they make deliveries to Oakhurst? Or is that not considered commercial trucking?
