Thanks for the replies. We'll carry extra water down there just in case. No need to post an update after your trip there on the 28th. We'll be there this Saturday. The mention of Hardin Lake brings up questions that I should have had answered well before now. According to maps I've seen, there are 2 trails out of White Wolf. One trail goes east about 7/10ths of a mile then hits a trailby DB1 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Our plan is to head out of White Wolf mid to late afternoon on July 12th and hike down toward Pate Valley. We'd like to stop for the night around Morrison Creek, and I was wondering if anyone has been through there lately so I can get a water report. Does it always have some flowing water? thanksby DB1 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
It sounds like we're doing a similiar hike as you. We're heading out of WW in mid July and plan to take our time going through the GCT for 6 nights and take some side trips along the way. We're looking to try an get through Muir Gorge, spend some time at Mattie Lake and Wildcat Point, then head over to the Tuolunme Peak/Mt Hoffmann/May Lake area. Thanks for the help. It took a while to get through to them, but I was able to reserve the wilderness permit today.by DB1 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Thanks for the tips. I didn't realize there was a backpackers campground there too. I'll be back in a few weeks looking for ideas on side trips.by DB1 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
If finding a spot at White Wolf doesnt work out, can anyone offer alternative parking that is close? Is there parking at the Lukens Lake trailhead on Tioga Rd or at Yosemite Creek campground? Thanksby DB1 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
It looks like we're going to do White Wolf to Tuolumne or May Lake in July and I'm wondering about parking. We'll be arriving on a Saturday and will start the hike on Sunday. Ideally we'd like a camping spot in White Wolf, but I'm sure the odds of scoring one on a Saturday in the middle of summer are pretty rare. We'll probably end up at the backpackers campground in Tuolumne on Saturday nby DB1 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Quotetomdisco Folks, I've seen several references in this thread to Whitebark Pass but can not find it on any map of this area. All I see are Ritter Pass and North Glacier Pass. Where precisely is Whitebark Pass? It's another 100 degree day today and I'm hiding inside instead of training for my upcoming trip, so I thought I'd do some armchair exploring and see if I could find Whitebark Pby DB1 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Quotesactown23 I'm always the first one when everyone awakens from their cars to get in line. That leads me to my next question. Where do you park when waiting in line? I thought the camp 4 lot required a permit.by DB1 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I made the incorrect assumption that because camp 4 had no reservations, everyone had an equal shot of getting in on any given day. Evidently once you get in you can reserve the spot for multiple days. Thanks for the reply.by DB1 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I'm thinking about trying to stay at camp 4 (much closer to our trailhead than the backpacker camp) the night before our hike this summer and I'm reading conflicting information on getting a spot. I understand that we'll have to line up in the morning prior to the ranger getting there at 8:30, but I'm confused on how many people are given spaces. There are supposed to be a total of 210 spots, bby DB1 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Quotequmqats As a backpacker with a wilderness permit you can park at the Trailhead/Backpackers parking lot for 5 days or more. I'm not sure what would happen at Curry Village if a car was left that long. Yep, I meant the backpackers lot. It looks like it's only a little past Curry Village.by DB1 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Maybe we're crazy, but we're looking forward to the challenge of hiking up the trail and we will spend the next 5 months getting ready for it. If I fail in my efforts to get in to better shape before the trip, maybe I can hire a sherpas from the camp 4 crowd. I think we're going to shoot for getting into the valley early enough the day before to stand in line for a spot at camp 4. If weby DB1 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Our plan this summer (late July) is to start our backpacking trip by hiking up Yosemite Falls trail. I know that's not a popular choice for hauling a backpack up, but I didn't want to deal with taking the bus out to one of the trailheads on Tioga Rd or compete with everyone else looking for a Happy Isle permit. I've been up the trail before and started early enough that I beat the heat on theby DB1 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Quotebenoit Hey, I could try to do that! I'd have to check with my friend though. I know he isn't fond of getting kidnapped. We stayed in a Curry Village canvas tent cabin August 7-11 a couple years ago and even though the beds have blankets we were a little cold. I didn't check, but they might offer additional blankets.by DB1 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Ok, I'll be looking for 20-30 degree bag. I was thinking that with an average July low of 55 in the valley and 3 degrees per 1000 feet that a 40 degree bag might be good enough up to 9000 feet, but I'd rather remove layers than be cold. I'll bet this has been asked numerous times, but I tried a few different searches and struck out. I found a listing on the NPS website for the typical high and low temps for each month in Yosemite Valley, but didn't see any thing with average temps at the higher elevations.
