I seriously doubt the whole story. Park Rangers do not threaten to shoot people. There is nothing I could find that says PEOPLE from countries where HMD is present cannot get hiking permits in our National Parks. Their livestock, of course, but people? No.by Dave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
That's good for us rockhounds. Lots of pretty rocks weather out of those cliffs. I'm probably heading to one of those beaches next month.by Dave - General Discussion
The Big Oak Flat Road between Foresta and Crane Flat is closed (24 hours/day) due to continuing storm damage. It's uncertain when the road will reopen. The only outside access to Yosemite Valley is via Highway 140.by Dave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I thought there was a thread on USGS markers on this forum somewhere. I couldn't find it. Maybe someone else know where it is.by Dave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Interesting how the environmentalists were ignored. We usually are when it gets in the way of someone making a profit.by Dave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
The Big Oak Flat road between the Foresta Junction and the Crane Flat will be closed nightly from 6:00 pm to 6:00 am due to hazardous road conditions. Call 209-372-0200 (then 1,1) to check current road status.by Dave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
From what I saw on AccuWeather, this series of storms is going to last about 2 weeks. And, I don't think that spillway is fixed. They put a bandaid on it hoping it holds. Unless they got some cement over those boulders, water will rush over, around, and under, them.by Dave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
"The Narrows" is just east of "The Dam." We really should start a map with these place names. The Dam is the 120/140 junction. The Narrows is the stretch just east of that. They widened The Narrows a few years ago and The Dam was removed in 2004.by Dave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
If you're lucky you'll be able to go out through Arch Rock. That might be open first.by Dave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
This has brought up something I've been thinking about for awhile. I've worked in the Park since 2004. I have never seen a good map showing all the place names on the roads. Is there some way we can start compiling one here?by Dave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
yes. That hairpin turn is Asphalt Curve. Continue northwest, after the right hand turn, and you'll see Rattlesnake Creek coming in on the left. From the pictures the Yosemite Conservancy has on their Facebook page, I think it's just before the creek.by Dave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I'd postpone any trip until next week. More rain, and more rocks, are coming.by Dave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Looks like I won't be going to the "Croaking Toad" tomorrow. It's in the Large Break Room in El Portal, but Hwy 140 is probably covered with rocks and such too.by Dave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Ouch. I've seen a couple of other accidents at that corner. It seems people going north forget to turn.by Dave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I don't know Asphalt Corner. Going north, you pass Foresta, go around a sharp left hand corner, then a sharp right hand corner, go a little ways and there's a creek coming in on the right. That's Rattlesnake Creek. It's about 2 miles from the Foresta Road/BOF Road junction.by Dave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Big Oak Flat Road will remain closed at least until tomorrow (Tuesday) morning, due to a rockfall that began yesterday morning. Material is continuing to come down and there's a boulder that appears to be in an unstable position. Several more inches of rain are forecast in the next few daysby Dave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
There has been a rockfall near Rattlesnake Creek. That's about a mile north of the Foresta junction. The road is closed until further notice.by Dave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
If I had the money I'd be buying a stove pellet factory. Millions of FREE trees. Around here they're being cut down and then run through a tub grinder and then shipped out for use as cover for land fills and such. I'd be making a huge profit and employing a few people in the process.by Dave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
You're assuming they'd listen the the rangers. I have a hard time convincing them to stay away from deer, or not parking in the middle of the road, or both.by Dave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Feeling a "compulsion" is not an excuse for idiotic actions that involves endangering the lives of others. I have felt that "compulsion" many times, but my intelligence overrode the emotional desires. This guy was obviously unprepared and way above his skill level for the climb he attempted. In that attempt he put several others in harms way and cost us tax payers tens of thoby Dave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
You cannot preserve the beauty of a national park and have a theme park. An artificial ice rink does not belong in a national park. The plan to move such artificial attractions out of the Park is a good one. The golf course should go next.by Dave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
The time to complain was during the comment period. It's a little late now. Yosemite is not a theme park. I would not have a skating rink there at all.by Dave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I don't understand why people are complaining. This has been in the MRP for a long time. This is nothing new or unexpected.by Dave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I remember driving through that tree. Strange they put 'shattered' in quotes.by Dave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I find the NOAA graph to be easier to read. It shows predicted levels a few days out. http://www.cnrfc.noaa.gov/graphicalRVF.php?id=pohc1by Dave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
The latest I've heard is that they are scaling back the prediction. They, I assume the NPS and some weatherperson, are predicting 15 feet. That's still a significant amount of water and will cause some flooding.by Dave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Quoteparklover They went without snow or ice gear - hence this is why I called them idiots. If they were competent, knew what they were doing and came prepared for the conditions, they might be called crazy but not idiots. I agree... sort of. Not much difference between an idiot and someone that's crazy. They were certainly fools to attempt that climb without the proper equipment.by Dave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Probably an awesome view, but is it worth your life? Ah, that explains why they say the cables are "down." That should be a clue to not try to go up.by Dave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I'm assuming the cables have been removed for the winter. Would this person have been trying to use the cleats and poles attached to the granite? Or are those removed too?by Dave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
