Seeing all the work that's done on those campgrounds and such, that $24 is damn cheap.by Dave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
QuoteWickettWay more people are killed each year by stupid asshats behind the wheel of their cars than by guns and do we see people losing their driving "privilege" because they are a danger? Most of the time no. The problem with that trite argument is that cars are not desinged to kill. Guns are. QuoteI agree that if you outlaw guns only the criminals will have guns,..... I just thought of a new safety device for those things; a sensor that automatically steers the damn thing into every pullout along the road, makes it stop, and waits until all the cars have gone by. Then it blows up.by Dave - General Discussion
QuotedqnielOh, I didn't realize that since it was only ~1.2MP. I figured you downsized it for the web. I was going to try something on it using a mixture of cloning and healing brush. Oops. I did downsize it for posting.by Dave - Photography advice, critiques and tutorials
QuotedqnielDave, do you have the original photo straight from the camera available? Was just curious to see it. The picture I posted above is from the original. I haven't had time to work on it though.by Dave - Photography advice, critiques and tutorials
QuotecalipidderYou missed the part where I said "law abiding responsible gun owners". I know many of them, and they are far from "untrained idiots". In fact, if I would want anyone around me in those situations I'd want someone who had been through responsible gun training and practice including keeping a cool head and a steady hand in stressful situations. Quotehotrod4x5The murder rate in Los Angeles has consistently gone down year after year, in fact, most major cities the rate has decreased. http://www.lacountymurders.com/pyear_stats.cfm This site goes back to 2005, 433 murders took place that year. Last year, it was 233. That's a pretty significant decrease. If you input each year on that site, you will see that it went down each year.by Dave - General Discussion
QuotecalipidderIf I were in that situation I'd rather that the odds be that there are guns in the hands of law abiding responsible gun owners around me than just the nutcase with one. Maybe if there was someone carrying legally nearby it wouldn't have been the massacre that it was and we wouldn't be spending years and millions of dollars prosecuting the nutcase. Just sayin'. It's simple math; get more guns out there and MORE of these attacks will happen, not less.by Dave - General Discussion
The worst 6 months of my life were spent in Pensacola, Florida. Not the brightest state in the union.by Dave - General Discussion
QuoteFrank FurterOf course, the current prevailing political opinion is that the girl and boyfriend should have been carrying weapons which would have prevented this sort of assault and injury. More than likely, with a clown like this one, they'd be dead before they could get their gun out.by Dave - General Discussion

A book I like might help you; Trail Tools: Yosemite Valley. It covers more than just the Valley and gives maps, along with profiles and mileages. The maps aren't specific enough for route finding and you will still need topos of the areas you're hiking in.by Dave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
QuotedqnielYou can use a feathered selection (to avoid harsh edges) and overlay from another image the same texture that you want to be in the overexposed area. I've never gone to such lengths in my post processing because I usually just give up on the blown highlights, but that should work if you're willing to spend a lot of time trying to make it look realistic. It's kind of like a manual, poby Dave - Photography advice, critiques and tutorials
QuoteszalkowskiChick-on would probably be better off if he worried more about spotting/identifying chicken hawks than agonizing over turkey vultures. Chicken hawks are easy to find. They are endemic to Washington D.C. but at certain times of the year migrate to all areas of the country.by Dave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Quotechick-onThank you Dave. w/r to the turkey vulture.. I was referring to this thread: http://yosemitenews.info/forum/read.php?1,5758,5758#msg-5758 (dang, time flies) The problem with a single photo is that it's hard to gauge the size, it's flight pattern, other habits, and often the colors. What could be a light phase red tail hawk could be a dark phase with poor lighting.by Dave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I'm going to have to call Big Oak Flat. In October I restored their rain gauge. They had better be using it. A bit south of Boot Jack I got: 17-Dec 2.20 18-Dec 2.83 19-Dec 1.31 If my numbers are any where near correct and with an annual average of 21 inches, we're at 87% already.by Dave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Quotechick-onOk, I guess I'll ask again... I'm curious about the identification process, even here we had a discussion about a turkey vulture and there was question about if it really was. Can you give some more insight? I would think there is a lot of room for mis-ids. In one of these counts if you can positively ID a bird - by sight or call - you mark it down. I was in a hurry. Only time for a snapshot. I only want to save the phote because of the face in the water. No tripod or shutter setting will ever get that face again. It was just a lucky shot.by Dave - Photography advice, critiques and tutorials
I'd rather see a desert mussed up a bit than having a nuclear plant built. As long as we keep making too many people we are going to have to be making some trade-offs. Free birth control for anyone on the planet that wants it, or a bunch of nuclear power plants making waste that make waste that's deadly for thousands of years - or longer.by Dave - General Discussion
Look just below and to the left of center. There's a face in the water. It's looking to the right. The washed out, over exposed, areas are towards the bottom. This is a resized (smaller) version that makes it look worse than it really is.by Dave - Photography advice, critiques and tutorials

QuoteeeekYou have to click with the control key down to select a bit to copy. You should also select a brush to suit the task. Thanks. I'll give that a try.by Dave - Photography advice, critiques and tutorials
QuoteeeekYou can use the Clone tool to copy other parts of the image. I used that on some of the photos at http://yosemitecampsites.com/ to remove people. I tried that but couldn't get it to work. Maybe I have to resort to reading the directions.by Dave - Photography advice, critiques and tutorials
Quotehotrod4x5If the area is completely overexposed, then there is nothing you can do. That's not true at all. The program mentioned in the other thread, which I downloaded, and other such programs, have a way to take another part of the photo and use a "spray can" to fill in the offending areas. I tried to do that but could not get the program to do it for me.by Dave - Photography advice, critiques and tutorials
