National Park Service (NPS) Intermountain Regional Director Sue Masica signed a Record of Decision (ROD) to not implement a remote vaccination program to address brucellosis in Yellowstone Bison. The ROD officially completes the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) process, which was developed in accordance with the requirements of the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 and included public involvement, including opportunities for the public to submit comments Draft EIS. The decision was to implement the No Action alternative, which continues the currently authorized syringe vaccination of bison calves and yearlings periodically captured at the northern boundary of the park. The no-action alternative is supported by the inclusive IBMP Citizen’s Working Group, most engaged American Indian Tribes, the Intertribal Buffalo Council, and the conclusions of a February 2013 Bison/Brucellosis Science panel composed of disease experts and convened by the NPS and Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks.

Additional information including an electronic copy of the Record of Decision and of the Final EIS is available online at http://parkplanning.nps.gov/BisonRemoteVacc. You can request a printed copy of either document by contacting the National Park Service, Bison Management Program, P. O. Box 168, Yellowstone National Park, WY 82190.
