A climber died Wednesday afternoon, March 9, 2016, after falling in Zion National Park. The cause of the incident is currently under investigation by the Washington County Sheriff's Office in cooperation with the National Park Service. The climber's name is being withheld pending notification of family.

The individual had been climbing a popular 1,200 foot technical route in Zion Canyon called "Moonlight Buttress," on the west side of the canyon. The individual was witnessed falling at approximately 12:30 p.m.by two other climbers in the area. These climbers were not associated with the individual. The climbers notified park rangers who located the individual's body at the base of the route. The individual was pronounced dead at the scene.

Zion National Park rangers are working closely with the Washington County Medical Examiner's office to confirm the individual's identity and notify the family. More information will become available after the investigation is complete.

"A very sad situation," said Park Superintendent Jeff Bradybaugh, "Our condolences go out to the individual's friends and family."
