Linking to pictures on Google

If, like me, you keep all your photos on Google's Picasa web service, you may have noticed that when they introduced Google Photos a while ago, some of the old ways of linking from this board to pictures there stopped working. I don't know that I can fully explain what's going on but I did figure out the following today:

  1. If you open the picture in Picasaweb and select the address shown under "Link" (in the "Link to this Photo" section of the right-hand panel), you'll get an address that looks like this: https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/WvwAoeWWKOPHYZ5w_QL1RdMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=directlink. As you can see, that will work as a link to the picture but it will not work to insert the image inline with your post.
  2. Similarly, if you go in to the new Google Photos service, open the photo you want to share and click on the share icon (the one that looks a bit like PacMan's mouth) and then click "Get Link," you'll get a link that looks like this: https://goo.gl/photos/JqugXzx2kdN543ce6. Again, this won't get your image inserted here.
  3. The problem is that the img function here expects a link to an actual photo (e.g., something ending in ".jpg" or the like).
  4. There are probably multiple ways around this, but what I found is if you open the picture in Picasaweb, right-click on the picture and select "Copy image address," that should give you a link that you can use with the "img" button here (the one in the middle of the tool bar with the picture of a mountain).
  5. That's for a Windows desktop environment. I don't know what the Apple equivalent of right-clicking is (or how you do it from your phone) but I'm sure somebody else will jump in and clarify that. Like I said, the trick is to make sure you've got an address that ends with a picture extension (.jpg, .gif, probably several others supported here).

You may also have to make sure that the Picasa album that holds the picture is shared but I haven't experimented with that yet.
