<HTML>The upper portion of the trail to the summit of Half Dome will be
CLOSED for a major portion of the summer of 2005: from 7am to 4pm, Monday through Thursday each week, opening up for hiking on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. There will be significant and much needed renovation taking place on the last stretch of granite switchbacks before the cables. Check out the NPS' detailed information here:

It should be noted that once the snow melts (and your guess is as good as mine on when that will happen ~ see Rick's emails below), this closure schedule will NOT affect the surrounding connecting trails to Clouds Rest,
Sunrise HSC via the John Muir Trail, and the Merced River canyon (to
Merced Lake HSC and beyond in all directions); just the last spur
trail off the JMT to the summit of Half Dome. I spoke to the Trails Division of the NPS in Yosemite yesterday (4/19) who verified all of the above.</HTML>
