Yosemite National Park Responds to Multiple Lightning Fires After Storm Passes Through

Intense thunderstorms passed through Yosemite National Park yesterday and ignited multiple lightning fires in the Foresta, Crane Flat, and the Yosemite West areas.

Twelve fires from this storm (including one just outside the park below Yosemite West) have been detected so far and firefighters are working to suppress them because of their proximity to these communities in the park. The majority of these fires are in the Foresta/Crane Flat area.

All available firefighters from Yosemite National Park responded to these fires by either hiking in from roadsides or rappelling in from the park's fire helicopter. Three park engines, Crew 7, Crew 6, and the park's fire helicopter responded. The helicopter also detected the multiple ignitions. Firefighters are being assisted by the rainfall that accompanied the storm. Yosemite firefighters also rappelled into the fire on the Sierra National Forest that was just below Yosemite West.

It is possible that additional lightning fires will be detected in the upcoming days.

All park trails and facilities are open. Yosemite is also managing three other fires in the park from previous storms. These fires are in the park's wilderness and are being safely managed for ecological benefit.
