The sun is shining, creeks are flowing and mosquitoes aren't biting -- yet. Summer in the Sierra Nevada has arrived in all its splendor, just in time for Memorial Day weekend.

cthenn better not read the article... because "the Four Mile Trail remains closed"...

sweet... Mineral King Rd. is open.... yo Bee... I got a "really" good one planned around Mineral King..

Mineral King is a wildlife bonanza. Hardly anyone goes there. On a trip to Sawtooth Pass encountered 12 deer, three marmots and countless other little critters. The four bears were down the road, though, around Silver City (wonder why?).


P.S. the high peak on the left of the horizon is Mount Whitney. I can't remember the name of the lake, I think it's Columbine Lake?

One more thing... anyone going into Little Yosemite Valley better be prepared for Mosquitos IMO.
There were a few already May 9th timeframe... so there will only be more now...

The article is actually pretty good.

My brother-in-law was at Lake Eleanor this past weekend and got driven into his tent at dusk. Eleanor is at about 4700' and on the western side of the park.
A few were out at Smith Meadow, elevation 6400', last weekend.
It is time to bring the repellent along in case there is some sort of pest that needs treatment.

Regarding skeeters: Road's end to Paradise Valley two weekends ago didn't have a lot of them, but there were a few especially around areas where water puddles. Nothing new.

Anyone have photos of ladybug invasions? It's about time for that, too.

Of course not, silly. Down below Monarch Lakes there were lots of little shoots trying to make a living. That day was a great hike, though getting up to Sawtooth was a slog, the ridge is disintegrating.

Mineral King is so isolated the deer don't run away. Watch out early in the season though, marmots will chew pretty much everything including your car's brake and radiator hoses. I took the above photo in late August and marmots were not a problem.

If you can manage a ride back, I think Mineral King to Mount Whitney to Whitney Portal would be the one to do. Plus lots of vacation days, which I've never had enough of.

A friend is talking about day hiking Onion Valley to Kings Canyon. If he does it, I'm going to be doing a lot of driving that day.

SWEET that's another one on the list of things to do. I think you might be able to do that in 2 days but 3 or 4 would be more fun.
