Lee Vining , CA (April 3, 2008)...The Mono Basin National Forest Scenic Area Visitor Center, located in Lee Vining, re-opened for the season on Thursday, April 3. From now through May 14, the Visitor Center will be open Thursday through Monday from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm, and will be closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Beginning Thursday, May 15, the Visitor Center will be open 7 days a week, from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Low visitor numbers during the winter, high utility costs, and challenging budget issues drove the decision to temporarily close the facility during the winter. Savings from the winter closure allow the Forest Service to offer additional visitor services and interpretive programs during the busy summer and fall seasons. The Forest Service continues to explore partnerships and identify opportunities to help reduce costs and gain efficiencies that will make a future winter program at the Scenic Area Visitor Center possible.
