Information on the lightning strikes and resulting fires of July 8, 2008.

1. Cascade fire, Mariposa Co, is at approximately 7500' El. - This fire is south of the Tioga Rd near Cascade Creek and east of the South Fork of the Tuolumne River. A single tree was struck by lightning. The smoldering fire is 50' by 50' in area, with little potential for spread. The fuel is predominately dead and down, large diameter trees and other forest litter.

2. Star King fire, Mariposa Co, is at approximately 7600' EL. - This fire is south of Glacier point road, northwest of Mt Star King and near old burn areas (Horizon Fire). It is in It is a 1/8 ACs in size, in brush, with a southwest facing slope and has potential for spread. It is Mariposa Co. The smoke is visible from Glacier and Washburn points.

Both fires are in wilderness areas and Fire Use Zones, however, due to regional smoke impacts and reduced fire resources, both fires will be suppressed. Supression actions have begun today (July 9, 2008). More dry lightning is predicted for the next few days, with possible thunderstorms and precipitation, moving in over Yosemite this weekend.
