I'm trying to figure out what portion of "Last of the Mohighans" (1991) was filmed in Yosemite. Most of the country scenes were done in North Carolina, particularly the final chase scenes up the mountain trail with steep drop-offs. I've been on that trail. The movie also included several shots of rolling tree covered NC mountains complete with eastern smog.

You're right... that's a mistake. I have removed that one. imDB lists the filming locations for the 1992 "Mohicans" and all of the locations listed are in North Carolina.

Getting back to the "Last of the Mohicans", I'm pretty sure the scene towards the end where the Huron chief is telling them all that one of the girls has to die, if you look up above him you'll see Yosemite Falls. (Bad sentence structure, I know)

Now I have a question, what scene from The Great Outdoors was filmed in Yosemite? Lots of it was filmed at Bass Lake.

I guess that's another error. The reason I included it was because of the reference on this page:

http://usparks.about.com/cs/movielocations1/l/blmoviesej.htm#G

However the listing on that page is full of errors. They list "The Great Outdoors" as being released in 1989, when it was released in 1988, and they list Chevy Chase as being in it, when he wasn't, and they list it as having part of it filmed in Yosemite NP, when it wasn't. The imDb listing for "The Great Outdoors" lists Bass Lake, but no part of Yosemite NP in the list of filming locations. Chevy Chase was in "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" released in 1989, but there is no part of it filmed in Yosemite NP.

Ok... that's just funny...

Why use El Cap and all and then not have background right too?
(at time 1:15+ it's a... wrong!)
But only a dork would recognize that... har har har!

I think that this El Cap scene comes at the end of the movie as a sort of "bonding" moment with Spock and Kirk. (I cannot play the video)

Actually, it's the very beginning (you couldn't play it so you didn't see the credits)
Between the beginning, and the end where Kirk, Spock and McCoy sing "Row Row Row Your Boat," nothing happened. Horrible movie with a couple good scenes in Yosemite.

Guess I'll have to go back and watch that miserable movie.

If you're including documentaries, probably ought to include Huell Howser's Yosemite Week.

Wow, I didn't know he did a whole week on Yosemite. I'll have to watch all of them. I did watch the one on the firefall and it was great. I like his shows and his enthusiasm for even the most arcane and trivial abandoned artifacts... who else can make an old rusty bullet, laying on the ground in a forgotten corner of a remote desert that nobody goes to any more, seem exciting and interesting all over again because of its history and the story behind it?

I've given away the DVD set for gifts a couple times (I almost said Christmas but one person is Jewish...)

Has anyone seen the 1901 "Nevada Falls"? Sounds like it was a short "documentary". Couldn't find much on the internet about it.

My grandfather, William Kat, worked in Yosemite from 1927 to 1946. He had a 1924 Model T Ford which he brought to Yosemite Valley but left pretty much parked in front of the old Sentinel Hotel because he never really got the hang of driving. The automobile was sold to a movie company and pushed off a cliff for a film probably in the 1930's. The remains of the automobile are in a photograph on which is written in my grandfather's hand, "The end of it - Big Meadow". So I'm thinking the automobile was pushed off the Old Coulterville Road or Big Oak Flat road and then dragged down and left in Big Meadow which is at the western boundary of the park. Since the Sentinel Hotel burned down in 1940, I figure the movie must have been in the years 1927-1940. These are the movie names I see from the list:

Yosemite (1927)
Junior Luck (1929)
Please (1933)
Easiest Way, The (1931)
Free Soul, A (1931)
Back to Nature (1936)
My Favorite Wife (1940)

Does anyone know if a car was shoved of a cliff in one of them? Or, is there a place that I can look at on the web where I might find such information?

This is one of those great family stories I would like to close out with a bit of third party validation.

thanks, BillA

Hi.

I do hope you can help me in my quest for places in Yosemite park that have doubled for other places in the world in Hollywood movies. Its not that commonly used as one might think with all its beauty.

Just to let you know who I am and what Im actually doing, my name is John Skoog, I am a artist and work mostly with film and/or film history, Ive done some more narrative films that I've showed at museum and film festivals around the world, for more info, visit my gallery's homepage, http://www.pilarcorrias.com/artists/john-skoog/. If you want to see the films, just let me know and I will send you links.
But I also work with the history of film and film-exhibiting and now starting up a project where these two things will really meet.

I'm traveling around, preparing to make a film documenting places around California that have "played" other parts of the world. As I understand it it was one of the many important factors why the film-production moved from Hoboken to California, that the topography of Los Angeles & California can provide almost any setting one could imagine, from Norwegian mountains to Chinese rice-fields.

To me that's a extremely beautiful and nice way to start to talk about early Hollywood, and the very special basic powers of film- something I feel is often forgotten when I watch contemporary popular films - not completely but almost. The film will premiere at Stockholm Film Festival this coming November.

Now I'm trying to find as many places as possible and of course was very happy when I found out about all the films made in Yosemite, using the beautiful landscape.
I know about which films but the area is so vast that its really hard to pin down locations, I don't need it to be exact exact but at least to get an idea of about where the films we're shot.
For now the films I'm mostly interested in is The Last of The Mohicans (1920) and then the already mentioned The Dragon Painter (1919) and other films from the Golden Age of Hollywood up to ca. 1940.

Thank you for time, and looking forward to hear what you think of the project.

My very best
John Skoog

Well, technically, it was filmed entirely in the UK. According to IMDB, it also includes some "stock footage" of Yosemite (although, for the life of me, I can't recall where off the top of my head). They barely had the budget to hire a cast, much less fly them half-way around the world!

In addition to the Long, long trailer, I remember another Lucille Ball - Desi Arnez movie that had a scene in Yosemite but can't find it. Desi played a biologist. I looked in many places but can't find the name of the movie.

Hi Bob.
For a very long time now I'm searching the name of a movie I saw on television when I was living in France in the eighties or beginning of nineties. I don't remember if it was a television movie or a theatre movie.
I don't remember the actors either, but I remember the general plot of the movie which part of it I think that was filming in Yosemite park . I think this movie was in some way inspired in the story of John Muir.

So the plot was: A man who used to work in a coal mine for years got a lung disease. His doctor says to him that he is condemned but if he want to live some few years more he must leave the mines and go to fresh air. So the man gone to the mountains where he find an old house where he faint. After that he waked up in the middle of a mount of wood and vapour around him with an Indian taking care of him. At the end of this very thought treatment, the man seems being cured. For the rest of his life he decided to stay there and learned every thing about the mountains and forests. He found giant trees (sequoias) and some time after, discovered that some woodcutter want to destroy them. So he begins a very hard fight to preserve them until he encounters with the President of United States and convince him to sign the creation of a national park to protect them. That's all I can remember. I would love to know the name of this movie. Anybody has an idea? Thanks
