Anyone have experience, intentional or otherwise, on travel cross country between Sunrise and Vogelsang (rather than going through Merced Lake area)?
Thoughts and suggestions appreciated.

The wife and I went from Elizabeth Lake to Emerick then to Vogelsang earlier this year. (then to Bernice and Florence Lakes...)
We went directly down Echo Creek and then headed almost due east to Emerick (to it's outlet).
The only issue was that the granite was very disjointed after heading east
and at one point we actually had to throw our packs down a crack and
go down the crack to get down. The section right before Emerick was very
steep also. Everything else was simple.
If it's late in the year after getting back on the trail towards Sunrise you
can go between the "Dolly Domes" and cut some more time off (done that).

Anyway, it's do-able but I wouldn't recommend you do it unless you have
some experience and have already done the Merced Lake trail.
The "disjointed" section may be too much for some...

Check it out on Google Earth to get an idea of what you are getting into.
The section I haven't done looks pretty simple from Echo Creek to the Cathedral fork.
North to where river really starts turning ... (very beautiful area), and then SW from there to the trail...

Anyway, Have fun..

I put the route from our Bernice Trek here:
http://yosemitephotos.net/main.php/v/bill-e-g/

On it I drew the way I would go to the Sunrise Trail in blue.

Just for the record:
- go this way not to save time but because you want to see the area
- please don't go with a 50lb pack
- the 2 creeks you have to cross may be difficult to cross

This trip (to Bernice and Florence) was one of my favorite this year.
The wife has warmed up to my x-country excursions and the night
before we went to Florence I said "I think we should just go back down
to the trail and go up to Florence" to which she says "can't we just
go straight across"... "um, ok! smiling smiley"
Then on the way to Florence we are hiking across and I'm 100 ft above her
on the rocks and she asks "should I just go straight up?".
"why, yes, you should..." smiling smiley

Good times

Dale,

Are there decent places to camp where the Florence Lake outlet connects with Lewis Creek? That's presently my target area for a campsite on the Vogelsang leg.

Jim,
I've only been by there a couple of times and I didn't really look for a spot around that area
so I'm not certain. I just peeked on GoogleEarth and it looks like there are granite areas
and flat spots a little north and west of there that look nice.
The place that I like is 1 1/2 miles north of Fletcher Creek near the pond at nearly 10,000 ft.
That's 750ft. more elevation gain tho.
If you got it in you... smiling smiley go up to Bernice.... a huge percentage of HSC loopers don't go up there...
so you may even have it to yourself...

Dale,

I was not planning on the side trip to Bernice Lake but you are not the first person to recommend it. Maybe I'll add that side trip since I will never be up that way again. Too many other places on my Yosemite wish list! Thanks.
