I am probably the last person to learn about this site with the USGS, but in case there is someone more clueless than I, the following site may be useful:

USGS online access to topo maps including 7.5" quads

http://store.usgs.gov/b2c_usgs/usgs/maplocator/(ctype=areaDetails&xcm=r3standardpitrex_prd&carea=%24ROOT&layout=6_1_61_48&uiarea=2)/.do

You can download a zip file that will produce a .pdf file of the map desired.

Just in time... thanks very much!

When you figure it out... put up a Dummies Guide... cause I was baffled.
And if you ever find out how to get the 1956 versions... I will forever be in debt.

You have to play around with the website a little. On my computer, the red balloon marker is sometimes off screen and I need to "anticipate" where the marker will fall. I don't know if it is website problem or my computer misbehaving.

Worked for me using Opera on Linux. But I did have to pay attention to the instructions.

Well... looky that...

Hmm... follow the on-screen instructions... and it works...

Ooopsie. (like I told Diggity Dog... I'm blaming it on my impression of Goat Fallz yesterday)

Try searching google for USGS home page and navigate to "Map Locator" (see below)

Or:

http://store.usgs.gov/b2c_usgs/b2c/start/(xcm=r3standardpitrex_prd)/.do

the choose "map locator" on left of screen

should be at
http://store.usgs.gov/b2c_usgs/usgs/maplocator/(xcm=r3standardpitrex_prd&layout=6_1_61_48&uiarea=2&ctype=areaDetails&carea=%24ROOT)/.do

Should display a page that looks like this:

follow the instruction on the right of the page.
you may need to download an "unzip" program like PKZip (free) to decompress the files and give you a pdf file. Of course, pdf requires an Adobe product (reader at least to work)

Let me know how it goes.

Ah, not really. I use mostly kpdf because it is very much faster than Adobe's bloat.

That is way beyond me. I'm just a country boy.

Free topo maps for all of California:

This looks like an FTP site. Any suggestions on using it?

All of the 7.5's should be free. Since they are not free...they're already paid for!

Don't be afraid of FTP sites. The WWW is already FTP! The WWW is nothing but FTP with anon login!!!

Geez folks
