10 Lakes area conditions
June 24, 2009 02:22PM
We are heading out this Sunday for what is supposed to be the GCT loop but as of June 11, the park website says that the 10 Lakes area has 100% snow coverage. I have yet to hear back from park service for an update, so, does anybody have any info about this area? How much snow might have melted in two weeks? If there is snow, how deep might it be?

It shouldn't matter how deep it is. You'll be able to walk on top of it now.
You might look on the bright side. If there is snow... there won't be any mosquitos.
I don't have first hand knowledge of the area since we haven't gone there this year..
so I can only conjecture...
- the snow really is melting slowly this year
- from Dana many lakes were still frozen over
- from Dana Evelyn had 80+% snow coverage around it
so... I wouldn't doubt that the lakes have some ice on them...
I'd just go expecting alot of snow around Tuolumne Peak ...
and then in the basin...
I'd expect the South Fork Cathedral to be flowing well... and butt cold

Sorry if this is of no use.

In case anyone else is interested, here is their response...

"Significant sections of the trail are still covered in snow and that could
make routefinding difficult."

Nothing a GPS couldn't handle.
