Feds may takeover California state parks

Last month, Governor Schwarzenegger angered many Californians when he threatened to close state parks in light of the budget woes. There were dozens of parks listed, including the beloved Mt. Tam and the historic Angel Island. Now the feds are saying they are thinking about taking over those two parks, and several more.

I just read that! I'm stoked because I live right by Mt. Diablo, and I don't want it to close. Camping trips to Tahoe, oh well...but I'll have my local playground open, that's cool.

Let's be careful - if the Feds "take over" the parks, there is no guarantee that they would stay open OR that they would remain parks. Unless there is a specific law against it, they could be sold to the highest bidder.

I am not in a hurry to see this happen.

Yeah, I learned about this after my initial post. I could not bear to live where I do if Mt. Diablo was sold to some stinkin developer who put subdivisions all over the side of the mountain.

I think the state will figure out a way to keep these parks open. It's only like 10 or so parks out of the hundreds... Heck, even all the parks in the state take 0.1% of the state's total budget to operate, so keeping a small minority of them open to avoid being taken over by the feds should be feasable...
