MidPen Open Space tries dramatic tree-cutting strategy to save its oaks

Emergency surgery is under way deep in the forests of the Santa Cruz Mountains, where dozens of young healthy trees are getting cut down in a desperate attempt to prevent the spread of a deadly disease to majestic elders.
At stake is the survival of ancient oak trees — symbols of strength and endurance that were seedlings when Mexico still ruled our region — which are becoming sickened by a tiny pathogen dispersed by nearby bay trees. To save the oaks, the bays must go....
