A University of Miami shark expert said Thursday it's too early to blame young great whites for a deadly attack on a kiteboard surfer in Martin County.

Several species could have bit Stephen Howard Schafer south of Stuart beach on Wednesday afternoon, said Neil Hammerschlag, research assistant professor at UM's Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science.

"Great whites are occasional visitors to our waters," said Hammerschlag, who has studied the predatory habits of the killer sharks.

"But you can't say it's a great white unless someone saw the attack or examined the wound
