Joann Stewart's family has been raising cattle in West Marin since her grandfather bought the Stewart Ranch in 1924. From 1973 until last week, however, Stewart never knew whether her ranch would continue for more than five years at a time. That's because the Stewart Ranch is one of many within the Point Reyes National Seashore. Since the creation of the seashore in 1973, the National Park Service has leased its ranchlands back to their former owners - but never for more than five years.
