Four bears killed after mauling of woman near Lillooet

Four bears have been caught and killed in response to the fatal mauling of a woman in a remote area outside of Lillooet, BC. The woman’s body was discovered Thursday night.

Conservation officer Rod Olsen said officers are optimistic that one of these bears was responsible for the woman’s death.



...The officers are still trying to determine the cause of this particular attack said Olsen. “Each bear is individual but normally bears attack people for two reasons: it could be a defensive attack of their young, their food or territory, or it could be a predatory attack,” he said.

Given the remote location of this particular attack, Olsen felt there was no immediate threat to the general public. At the same time he also advised caution: “If you notice bears in your area acting aggressively and losing their fear of humans, notify us immediately.”

A recent study by University of Calgary professor Stephen Herrero suggests that predatory bear attacks are on the rise in North America.
