Sections of various trails in the Swasey Recreation Area of west Redding will be closed for short periods during a 30-day project this summer, while grazing goats are used to thin out vegetation that could feed a wildfire.

The project is expected to begin in late June.

Tim Bradley, fire management officer for the Bureau of Land Management Redding Field Office, said the goats will be used to reduce grasses and brush in shaded fuel breaks that have already been built, strengthening and expanding them. It is part of a long-range fuel management strategy that uses several fuel treatment methods, including mechanical removal of brush, small trees and grasses.

The BLM will post signs in areas of the temporary trail closures and post information on informational bulletin boards.

For more information, contact the BLM Redding Field Office, (530) 224-2100.

This idea was tried to eliminate noxious, invasive, alien weeds in Montana but was not very successful. Goats preferred native vegetation and were hard to contain.

The most creative sign in the Chinese zodiac, those born in the Year of the Sheep (also known as the Year of the Ram or Goat) are often artistic, sensitive, sweet and charming.

Sounds about right.

Words that you've undoubtedly heard used to describe gloves.

"are often artistic, sensitive, sweet and charming."

But boy those that aren't, and we know a few, are as described in my previous post.

I'm not sure Tang has the "loogification" factor I'm looking for.
I'll have to whip up a batch... had some last week... just don't think it fits the bill.

Listen, "GOAT" is not a four letter word. ........ Hmmmm ?? or is it???

Go Cougars!

[However, I must protest the article's accuracy: no self-respecting coyote would ever eat a goat - the taste, if you can call it that, lingers for weeks and destroys the ability to savor real food.]

I think the use of the term "target population" is quite offensive!

"Goat, it's what's for dinner?" is probably more appropriate.

ok... now that is even goofier!

“(Goats) have unique properties because they are ‘browsers’"
- I'd agree with that ... web browsers

"rid a 6.25-acre portion of her property of thistle, wild grape vine, poison ivy and other weeds"
- uh... Goats no likey poison ivy or oak!

"there’s a 650-foot building that holds up the bank"
- sounds like a great bank ... quite secure

"will have to protect kids in the neighborhood because if they have a goat close to home, they’re going to want to see it"
- let's be honest here... goats really don't like kids

"perceived by other city residents who also want to keep nondomestic animals, such as chickens or even a donkey"
- huh... I had no idea chickens were nondomestic

"This is a small community here. It’s not ‘Little Kentucky’ with vicious dogs"
- hmm... that's a bit harsh... but then again... no mention of cousin loving... so maybe not too bad...

Mansfield, O-HI-O... we be a Little bitsy town... but at least we aint a Little Kan-tuck-eee

I came across an article, about a year ago, that protested against the use of the word "hillbilly" to describe residents of West Virginia, Tennessee, and Kentucky - they are henceforth to be referred to as "Appalachian-Americans."

[I think that it is still OK to refer to Nevada residents by the former term.]
