Vogelsang High Sierra Camp (strenuous)

13.8 miles (22.2 km) round-trip, 1,400-foot elevation gain; 8 hours.

Begin across the road from the Dog Lake parking area (Tuolumne Meadows Shuttle Stop #2)

The first two miles of the John Muir Trail are relatively level as they follow the Lyell Fork of the Tuolumne River. At the Rafferty Creek junction, the trail begins its 1,200-foot ascent to Tuolumne Pass. Follow the signs to Vogelsang High Sierra Camp, another 160 feet higher in elevation. Hike beyond the camp to Vogelsang Lake (0.5 mile, 280-foot elevation gain) or to Vogelsang Pass (1.5 mile, 600-foot elevation gain).

Where is a good campsite around Vogelsang away from the backpackers group site?

What about doing Tuolumne Pass instead?

Townsley Lake has good camping pretty much all around.

There are two nice sites that I know of, both almost exactly 0.5 mile from the trail intersection at Vogelsang.

One is at the far end of the meadow on the trail heading toward Evelyn. It is sufficiently removed from the backpacker's site that you don't even know that they are there. When you reach the east end of Fletcher Lake, go about 0.1 mile N (perpendicular to the trail and the long axis of the lake). You will find a tree-covered rise next to some granite slabs.

The other is along the same trail but in the opposite direction (toward Emeric). You will drop some in elevation and then the trail will flatten out a bit. Keep an eye out on the left-side of the trail (S) and you will spy a small waterfall on Fletcher Creek.

By the way Vogelsang is one of the five historic High Sierra Camps.
