MINERAL, CA - The recent storms and transition to icy winter conditions have closed the Lassen Volcanic National Park Highway to vehicle traffic for the season as of Monday, December 1. The park highway is open to the Manzanita Lake area at the north entrance and to the Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center, one mile inside the southwest entrance to the park. "A winter visit to Lassen will transport you to a snow-covered landscape just waiting to be explored," stated Acting Park Superintendent Steve Gibbons. "We invite you to the park to snowshoe, ski, go sledding or enjoy a cup of hot chocolate by the fireplace in the Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center," stated Gibbons.

Lassen Volcanic National Park is open throughout the winter and offers a wide array of winter activities. Ranger-led snowshoe walks are offered on Saturdays and Sundays starting January 3. Meet at the Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center at 1:30 p.m. for a 2 hour walk through Lassen Volcanic's spectacular winter scenery. Come discover winter at Lassen through outdoor fun and film at the third annual Lassen film Festival, January 17 through 19, 2015 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Join us for this free event to celebrate Lassen Volcanic National Park and outdoor recreation through film. Entrance to the park is free on Monday, January 19 in commemoration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

Visitors to the park should be prepared for a range of weather conditions. Check the most recent weather forecast, dress in layers, carry food and water. Stow a shovel, extra blankets and tire chains in your vehicle in case unexpected winter road conditions delay your travel.

The Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center is open from 9:00 a.m to 5:00 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. For more information on the film festival,, snowshoe walks, current weather conditions, or general information, please contact the park at 530-3595-4480 or lavo_information@nps.gov.
