I went into my 40-year old photograph archive to retrieve this
photo taken of the aftermath of the Glacier Point Hotel fire in
the summer of 1969. I was on the park campground maintenance
crew at the time, and made one trip to the post-fire scene.

So did they ever figure out what caused that fire?

It was an electric fire.

Was there any disagreement as to re-build the hotel or not, or was it in general consensus that an era had ended?

See the last couple paragraphs of this link:

[P.S. I'm certain that there were a lot of unhappy rodents up at Glacier when their home burned down in 1969. My first trip to Yosemite was in 1968; drove up to Glacier, took one look at that rat's nest, decided that I wasn't going to set foot on it, and went back over to Washburn where I spent the night.
P.P.S. Too bad Hertzog didn't pull down the Half Dome cables too.]

My, you are a curmudgeon!

Why is it such a big problem for you that Half Dome is accessible to people who are hale and hearty, but otherwise not mountaineers, that is, skilled cliff-scalers? Are you somehow harmed by this state of affairs? Not trying to start a fight, I am just really curious...

Oh, heck - I readily admit to being a curmudgeon sometimes. Hardly a loaded word in this day and age, right?
