I hope you went up here too... there's an interesting feature "on" the trail that you don't see often.

No worries. I can appreciate yours as it is clearly better. You have clouds, better color, diversity and better compositon. I still keep putting the digital camera up to my face, thinking I am looking through a view finder. Hard on the nose.

Yes, you said to go to the gap, but didn't tell me HOW to make my legs take me there (legs had other ideas). My handler was actually interested in the trail above the lake mentioned in another thread. Upon further research (later), it sounds like the construction of this trail was very involved and a major engineering project over the Gap.

BTW, on the trail below the original picture, we saw a photo shoot in progress. Quite a way to bring the equipment. Climbing in this area is like a mini-expedition (17 miles from trailhead).

The only other tunnel I can think of is in Glacier NP... and that
trail was closed when we were there due to Grizz's.
(thus my constant irritation at black bear hysteria)
(i.e. there shouldn't be any)

It mentions "Hamilton Gorge" (another name for Kaweah Gap?) and it sounds like there was a bridge constructed over that. Correct??

Beyond Big Hamilton Lake, there is nowhere to go but up! The climb begins with a series of sweeping switchbacks across the bluffs to the north of the lake, before turning east towards the sheer-walled avalanche chute known as Hamilton Gorge. In 1932, Park Service engineers erected a steel suspension bridge across the Gorge, but in the winter of 1937, a massive avalanche tore the bridge from its moorings and swept its twisted wreckage down to the shores of Big Hamilton Lake. You can still see the bridge's concrete foundations and a few scrap metal remains, but the trail now uses a ledge and tunnel that were blasted by the Civilian Conservation Corps the next summer.

Precipice is quite round.... as shown in your map.
I added more captions. Maybe you are talking about the lake in Nine Lakes Basin?
