There is an associated story related to elk nutrition in wolf country. Cattle ranchers often complain that even if the wolves do not attack, the stress and feeding changes result in loss of weight gain. I have never heard that argument made for elk:

I have been amazed at the value of each cow and the significance in a large herd of 50-100 pounds of weight loss/animal. Depending on the herd size it can be thousands of dollars in a industry with feast or famine returns. I think the main problem is proving that the wolves were the cause and to what extent. With a carcass there is more forensic evidence.
