While much younger and living in a very rural area I used to try to shoot at crows in a large maple tree where they would congregate at 5:00AM on summer mornings waking us up. I would go out the front door, sneak quietly around to the rear and ever so carefully poke my head around the corner to take aim. The crows, about 300' away, would become immediately aware of my presence and take flight.

Whenever you see crows feeding on the ground they will always have at least one lookout high in a tree ready to sound the alarm in event of perceived danger.

Crows using traffic to crack walnuts (video)

What do Van Gogh, Shakespeare, the Hopi and Kayukon People, Mark Twain, and the rock band The Counting Crows have in common? They all draw inspiration from some of our most common, but least understood birds: the crow and the raven. Dr. John Marzluff, Professor of Wildlife Science at the University of Washington, leads us on an investigation of the inspiration of ravens on people and our effects on these adaptable birds.

Ulogoni, thanks much for all the nice links. (Note: Savage's book makes frequent references to Bernd Heinrich's work.)

For anyone intimidated by the 1:46:24 running time of the YouTube video,
John Marzluff's seminar: 6:30 - 57:15
Q&A period: 57:15 - 1:19:45

P.S. Would love to have that 25 ft. raven sculpture sitting in my front yard. (The canyon where I live has a substantial crow and raven population and I'm sure that they would appreciate it.)

Appreciate it by turning it white?
