Hikers flirt with dangerous sightings all the time—we thrill to the presence of bears, mountain lions, precipitous peaks, and raging rivers. But it'd be a rare hiker who's pumped about finding a bomb in the wild.

I lived in San Diego for 45 years, it was somewhat (obviously still is) common for people to find unexploded ordnance in the corridor between Miramar and Santee (where the above article references). Good deal the hiker tagged it with GPS and nothing else, I think awareness of such things is pretty high in San Diego. You might want to check out Carrizo Bombing Range in Anza-Borrego state park as well, same issues there.
