Grand Canyon, AZ - Grand Canyon National Park Superintendent Steve Martin today announced that the park will begin accepting applications for a commercial use authorization (CUA) for bicycle rental operations on Grand Canyon National Park’s South Rim.

The National Park Service will issue one CUA authorizing a temporary bicycle rental operation located at Canyon View Information Plaza near the Grand Canyon Visitor Center within Grand Canyon National Park. Under the CUA, the permittee will be authorized to rent bicycles to park visitors for use on approved paved roadways and some of the greenway trails on Grand Canyon National Park’s South Rim. The permittee will be responsible for providing and maintaining all rental equipment necessary for the operation as well as a temporary sales and storage facilities.

The National Park Service will issue the CUA for an initial term of twelve months. The term may be extended for up to an additional twelve months.

Grand Canyon National Park’s South Rim Visitor Transportation Plan called for the construction of a permanent bicycle rental facility near the Grand Canyon Visitor Center. The National Park Service will utilize information and data collected during the term of this CUA to aid in the design of a permanent facility and in determining how bicycle rental operations will be managed in the future.

In order to be considered completed applications must be received by February 22, 2010 at 4:00pm local time.

The National Park Service will review all applications received by the closing date and select the best qualified applicant to operate the bicycle rental.
