The rehabilitation of the trail to Spruce Tree House will continue beginning Monday, June 14 and continue through Friday, July 16. During this time, the trail will open at 10:00 a.m. daily, and close at 6:30 p.m. From 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., park rangers will be available on the porch of the Chief Ranger’s Office and at the Spruce Tree House overlook to answer questions. Both of these sites provide great views of Spruce Tree House. Access to the Petroglyph Point trailhead will also open at 10:00 a.m.

The rehabilitation of this popular trail is one of the projects funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA). This is the first major rehabilitation of this trail since the 1930’s.

The project includes documentation of historic stone wall construction by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), repairing and stabilizing the historic CCC stone walls, restoring original CCC stone drainage structures, removal of old asphalt, stabilization of trail base, and resurfacing the trail with the recycled asphalt.
