WEST GLACIER, MONT. – Glacier National Park officials announce that park personnel are working to open Logan Pass to motorized vehicle traffic as soon as possible, but Going-to-the-Sun Road (Sun Road) rehabilitation night work is already underway. According to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) night work started Monday, June 21 at 9 p.m.

Contract HK Contracting, Inc. now has day and nightshifts working at both works zones between Big Bend and Logan Pass and between Siyeh Bend and Logan Pass. Night work during 2010 will be from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. on the west side of the Continental Divide. No passage will be allowed through the construction zone during the entire 10-hour work shift. The road on the east side of the Divide will have the same nighttime restrictions, but there will be one short, 15-minute window for passage through the construction zone at 2 a.m.

Due to day and night construction there is no public access beyond the vehicle closure gate on the west side of Sun Road. Hikers and bicyclists are allowed access beyond the Jackson Glacier Overlook vehicle closure on the east side to just below Siyeh Bend. Park employees hope to have the Logan Pass section of the Sun Road open to through traffic within the next day or two.

Plowing is completed on the Sun Road itself, but avalanches came down over the weekend and heavy rain on Monday brought down rockfall and debris that has needed to be cleared from the road.

Road updates will be announced as soon as information is available.
