Late Season Wildflowers

One of the benefits of the late season rain is that wildflowers that would have dried up and disappeared by now are still persisting...

Olde Dude told me that there is a chicken that hangs out on the median strip on 99, subsisting on wildflowers, soZ Chick-on better have a talk with this bird!!

Actually, I totally agree -- the wildflower season in general has not measured up to years past. My theory is that many of them did not get the subsequent blast of sunshine following the rain, so they did not germinate....yet. We may have a bizarre late season display once Spring Summer arrives (I just noticed some wild raddish coming up today -- they should have come and gone by April)

Hard to see under the snow bill-e-g has favored lately.

I was told the wildflowers in a few of the places I went while visiting would be beautiful. They were almost non-existent . I'm guessing there was too little sunshine and too much rain?

Well here on the east side, we had a 6 week "january thaw." Some similar temps as here in Juneuary (70*'s.) This got the grasses growing early...maybe crowding out some of the flowers. Had very few blooms here and the poor flowers that did appear have been beaten by the wind.

We visited Carrizo Plain in April and there were tons of flowers, but they were flattened by snow. (Long grasses there, too.) The Lancaster poppies bloomed well but were surrounded by brown grasses, not green like last year. The irises here were beautiful but short lived...they virtually disappeared with the Memorial Day weather. (Wind, wind and more wind...throw in a little hail...did I mention the dam wind?)

I believe that there should be some great displays later, though, in the high country...

Finally.... the poppies were out on along the route of 120 back to SF Bay Area

Anyone been on 140 lately/recently?

There was also an amazing number of flowas on one section of Old Priest Grade.
