How are waterfalls right now?
June 24, 2008 06:15PM
We're thinking of heading up to the park over July 4th weekend. Wanted to know if anyone has an idea about how the waterfalls will look this time of year? Is there still a good flow at Yosemite Falls, for example?

All the major falls besides Bridalveil (didn't go into the Valley) were very impressive and flowing nicely last weekend (22nd). Since there is still snow melting you will not be disappointed.
Not sure about Bridalveil ... hard to tell from Bridalveil Creek on Glacier Pt. Rd. but fairly certain it should be very nice too since there is still snow on Horse Ridge.

Have fun

All the major water falls in the valley have plenty water. If you really like waterfalls I would suggest going to Hetch Hetchy to see Wapama Falls. I was there last weekend. It was magnificient!

As of last Friday, June 20, Yosemite Falls still looked fairly good, best at night (resplendent under a full moon!) and in early morning following the previous day's snowmelt max several miles back upstream; The big Merced River falls were both just great, if not at their hugest, and Bridalveil was ethereally lovely with a very good flow. From Glacier Point, Pyweack Cascade looked moderate.

The Cascades were considerably smaller than a few weeks earlier, and Ribbon Fall was nearing its end with quite small flow. Wildcat was very small. No Horsetail, no Lehamite. Sentinel Fall was a slim trickle. Illillouette Fall was moderate. Silver Strand was barely more than a wet stain on the cliff. Ditto "Sunnyside" Fall (off the easterly shoulder of Three Brothers). Royal Arch Cascades were about done. Staircase Fall had flowing water noticeable on only one drop; the rest was heavy streaking. Glacier Point Fall (above Happy Isles and across from Sierra Point) was unnoticeable.

Did not see Snow Creek Fall or Basket Dome Fall this visit.

The stream flow gauges show diminishing flows now on an almost daily basis - if you want to see falling water anywhere besides Bridalveil and the Merced River, better haul yer carcass up there soon!

Wilderness forever,

Any waterfalls updates? I'm hiking to the base of Illilouette Fall on Monday or Tuesday and would like to know the current conditions of waterfalls in the parks. Thanks.
