Not often that Bridgeport Shell doesn't have the highest gas price in the state! Not even Lee Vining could make #1

Yeah, my guess is Death Valley is at least $6.00

The most expensive place I've ever seen gas in California was Kings Canyon Lodge in Giant Sequoia National Monument. Back when I drove by, they had unleaded regular at something like $5.50/gallon when it was about $3.25/gallon in Fresno.

The big thing they had was glass vial gravity feed pumps. As well as a sign that they don't allow photographs of the pumps without the permission of the management.

Probably because the pumps were illegal and could not be tested by the county weights and meausres dept.

They were perfectly legal with the county weights and measures stickers and everything. This isn't the photo I took, but it is the place:

They have modern hoses and nozzles. I'm not sure if the nozzle mechanism works properly. I don't think they can do proper vapor recovery with that setup. The octane number stickers also look a little out of place.

Actually I didn't see the sign saying no pictures without permission. I took my photo before it was up. The place gets some pretty bad reviews overall though.

There used to be a place with antique pumps in the Bay Area. The owner operated as an independent but gave it up and sold to someone who was going to turn it into a 76 station.

Those reviews almost make me want to go, just to see the wretched old people... almost.

This place closed a while back. The owner got a one year suspended sentence that won't be served if he can stay clean for his three years probation term and take anger management classes. He also can't own a firearm for ten years.

Here's a more sympathetic article about the owners of Dante's:

I have no sympathy for him. He simply can't control his anger.

There have been people who wanted to dine at his restaurant. After a drive through there one may be aching or a bit tired and want to collect themselves. There have been numerous reports that he would come out and yell at people to get out of his parking lot before he'd call the sheriff's dept on them. He was reported to have chased someone at high speed on US-50 and tried to cut off the driver. His wife has been noted to size up people who wanted to dine there and tell them that it wasn't their kind of restaurant. He's apparently also used racial slurs at potential customers and had called the sheriff's dept so many times that they generally ignored him for his numerous claims that people were trespassing.

There's no wonder he had so little business. He was so paranoid about people using the land for their bodily functions that he rarely gave anyone a chance to be an actual customer.

The guy is now working at a casino restaurant in Stateline.

I think those are two different places, aren't they? The other one was in King's Canyon.
