Yosemite to Mono Lake in winter
November 03, 2008 04:01PM
I am going to be in Yosemite this week and would really like to go over to Mono Lake and the Owens Valley. What is the best way to get there if Tioga pass stays closed for the winter?

Highways 120, 108, and 4 are closed right now and maybe will be for the season. If you have the time then 88 to 395 and then south to Mono Lake. This is the shortest way across the Sierras. It's possible that 89 will be open to Topaz Lake but don't count on it. 88 is plowed all winter for the dam tenders and Kirkwood but is often closed after a storm for plowing and for avalanche control. If you do go across on 88 try to do the highest parts between 11am and 1pm when the road is less likely to be icy.
