Re: Any chance for more convenient showers at campgrounds?

Yosemite had to be one of the most difficult places I've found for campers to find a place to shower. I've seen everything from NPS visitor centers (My Rainier) with coin-op showers to reasonable coin-op concession-provided showers (Crater Lake, Lassen). I did have issues with the cost at Lodgepole Village in Sequoia NP being $3.50 for a coin-op shower where you supplied your own towel. That seems excessive.

The showers at Curry Village seem to be enforced now for either a receipt or guest key.

Is there any way there might be coin-op shower rooms installed in the major campgrounds? If they ever plan on rebuilding some of the bathrooms, they could be rebuilt with shower rooms with 24-hour coin-op. Right now it seems to be odd trying to go to Curry Village or Housekeeping Camp in order to get a shower that you may or may not have to pay for.

Also, if you use the river you could charge admission to watch the show instead of paying for a shower.

the river works great for me, i'm over weight right now, so no one in their right mind would want to be around to watch and stare... needless to say, i get the whole river privately ;-)

You know what works really well in lieu of showers? Baby wipes! Get the unscented ones or the bears might want you to wipe them down, too...

(although nothing takes the place of a warm shower, when I must, I use a wipe by Eco-Select that fits the non-scented requirement, but its also guaranteed to fully decompose in 21 days. they come 30 to a pack, 8x10 inches.

Most "baby wipe" style wipes use rayon although the "flushable" ones have to be paper. Rayon is modified wood cellulose and will eventually biodegrade in any conditions that will degrade cotton.

I remember the American Parks Network guide (the green pamplets handed out at many national parks) for Yosemite once had an ad for the antibacterial (the ingredient is actually broad spectrum antimicrobial) versions of Wet Ones" wipes. The picture they had was for the lemon scented version. The ad showed a pit toilet and had some question about how sanitary it was to touch all that. I use these by wiping when I get in an wiping before I leave.

I've used the unscented "Wet Ones Outdoors" wipes on camping and backpacking trips. I generally don't like the paper ones because they have a tendency to break on me.

When I first used the Curry Village showers in 2007 I was charged $3 but never given a receipt, nor asked to produce one at the shower room. The second time I tried it I was told to just do it without paying by the desk clerk, who even offered me a towel. Kind of reminds me of the day I took a bus and the driver put his hand in front of the fare box so I wouldn't do it. I don't think it was a free fare day as I saw others boarding with fare receipt/transfers.

Seriously - I did a search for the word "shower" or "showers". The first mention I ever made in this forum of how I was charged (or not) for a shower was in a thread posted by someone complaining that they were charging $5 at Curry Village for non-guests and enforcing it with monitors. Someone had already brought down the hammer before I started discussing it.

Did it ever occur to anyone that those guys demanding the $5 at the shower might just be collecting it for themselves?

I've never asked if it cost, never been asked to pay, and never paid. Not sure what I'd do if someone asked...probably just ignore him, or act like I don't understand.

As far as the Merced, probably no need for soap, as you won't be in it long enough to soap up, at least in winter or spring. The water quickly becomes painful, it's so cold.

Not if they're requiring payment at the front desk and then setting up attendants at the shower rooms to check for keys or receipts.

They do supposedly charge $5/adult to use the pool for non-guests. I suppose someone could do that, rinse off before entering the pool, and then showering again after the dip. Take a look at "Swimming Pool".

It might get to a certain point where it doesn't pay to do that. I think that might be when the LE rangers show up to take someone into custody. ;-)

Try your average "polar bear club" where people swim in partially frozen lakes and rivers.

That works best at the Ahwanee-- just go from room to room until you find an open door, walk in and use the shower. They have much better equipment and sundries than Yosemite Lodge or Curry.

Hey,
It is possible to cook a pot roast on the hot exhaust manifold of your car. I found this site that generated "unlimited" hot water from the same heat source.
