I was admiring your July '08 photo of Matthes Crest. How did you approach the crest? Did you go up from the Echo Lake basin or did you come from the Budd Lake direction?

We actually came from Matthes Lake.
Here is the route we took:

It was just a 2 day trip with the wifey. The yellow line was day 1.
Fastest way is up from Budd Lake trail and then xcountry up from Budd
Lake itself. Not too difficult cross country.
This is definitely a trip we want to repeat since the Mosquitos were
horrendous at the Lake and on the Crest... they kept getting worse
the higher we went. Once we got near the Cathedral Lake trail on
the way out they all disappeared... that's the way it works...
We didn't get to spend as much time exploring the crest since the bugs
were pissing us off...
