Re: Neglecting a national treasure

I think some of you have probably seen a group with a blog devoted to getting MSH declared as a National Park and hopefully additional funding. Their motives seem to be that an upgrade in status might help improve tourism in the area to aid the local economy. They got peeved that the only year-round visitor center there was closed due to funding cuts.

Let me just say that I went to Mount St Helens last year and visited the Johnston Ridge Observatory. Certainly it was a fascinating peek at an amazing geographical event. However - I can't see anyone really wanting to spend more than a few hours there unless they're hiking or fishing. The most I think they could hope for is a relatively low-visitation park like maybe Death Valley or Lassen. I remember the drive to the Observatory, and it was pretty much just brush covered foothills and massive areas of fallen trees. It's not exactly what one imagines for a multi-day vacation.

I'll just say what it was. It was on a well-known blog hosting site called Blog Spot dot com. Take the last "g" in blog and add spot, and I think that's where the censor list hit.

If you read some of the other items there, they make note of the relative visitation between Lassen and MSH. I would note that there's actually a lot of interesting stuff at Lassen you wouldn't find at MSH. There aren't a whole lot of thermal areas at MSH. They don't have any overnight accomodations. MSH gets a lot of visitors who drive to the observatory, watch the movie, and drive back home. You don't need a whole lot of full-time employees for that.

Really? I thought it was maybe because ******** contained gspot. I know a lot of legitimate users of ******** who don't use it to spam.
