Other than the Valley / Ahwanee. smiling smiley

This is an incredibly difficult question IMO.

My answers would be:
- Favorite Feature : Matthes Crest followed closely by Starr King
- Favorite Peak : Volunteer
- Favorite Meadow : Rodgers
- Favorite Lake : Kibbie (Benson got spoiled by a-hole Log cutters!)

As for favorite place:
Would have been Benson if not for some people...

So I'm gonna have to ask the wife. She might say Bernice.

What's yours?

My most recent "holy moley" moment was hiking through that section of the Tuolumne River upstream from Glen Aulin with the pools, islands, little cataracts in late afternoon.

That spot has it all. Lots-o-glacial stuff and the river.

An aside:

The last couple of weekends bill-e-g and I did the Poopenaut Valley and the Eagle Peak area out of Foresta. The afternoons were sunny with a slight cool breeze making for perfect nap time.

One of the must do hikes that I have charted for this season is the LD trailhead to just above Glen Aulin HSC to the Water Wheel falls. Will I be anywhere near the area that you are describing?

Sorry, start from Lambert Dome parking lot and hike to Glen Aulin general area (I am not staying there, its just a general destination). Water Wheel falls being 1400 down and to the North west of Glen Aulin to be exact to my understanding. I am wondering if the place you speak of is anywhere near this vacinity.

Pothole Dome is at the west end of Tuolumne Meadows. There's no official trail there but it's an easy cross country hike to intersect the official route.

You'd park by Pothole Dome:

Yes, it is smiling smiley.

With me, my "favorite" place changes according to what I'm in the mood for, and the time of year.

But you mentioned some greats. I am also very fond of the area between Evelyn Lake and Bunnell Cascade. Thousand Island Lake, Oh yeah, that's not Yosemite.

Yes, if you google "glen aulin hike tuolumne" you will find discussion of the area between Tuolumne Falls and White Cascade (Glen Aulin). I found it stunning. I am trying to paste a map with a circle and arrow at spot.

The map came out great and I know exactly where you speak of; I can see it right here on my map. I will be going right thru the area and I am now even happier that I have settled on this hike as my intro to Tuolumne area.

The hike in from Tuolumne Meadows is a good,,easy high altitude warm up. Mostly flat meadow. I haven't been to Waterwheel (we turned left and went to May Lake). "It's all good" (thought I would never say that)

Check the small map I posted this thread. Additionally, there is a good, basic NPS pdf map that you should try to download.

eeeek,
The Pothole Dome route puts you on the wrong side of Tuolumne River. Any trouble getting across in the spring??

Jon probably meant Merced Lake. The area between Moraine Dome and
Echo Valley is amazing. Same area. Same spot. If Nevada and Vernal
are booking... so will this area... Buzz Buzz Buzz there Miss Bee! (Ms. Bee?

This is regarding the west side of the river. Posted by dan from the other forum site when I bitched about horse manur (imagine that!).

me: Me no likey the poopy on the trail to Glen Aulin .. soooo much...
(ok, so not my exact quote, but whatever)

dan:
That's true. What I do is walk down the left bank of the Tuolumne River (facing downstream)--that is the southwest bank. There's a path along the river not on any maps that appears to be an old, unused trail. I even found some old sheepherder carvings on an old tree along the way--but don't expect to find it.

At the bridge around Little Devil's Postpole I rejoin the trail.

That's a great idea. A person could even make a day hike down one side and up the other!

Anyone know of other arborglyphs in/near Yosemite. This is an interesting subject (google BASQUE TREE CARVINGS). Somewhere or other (?NPR) I remember learning that they can be quite "graphic".

Bill-e-boy,

My favorite lake is Table Lake.
There's some big boys in there. Nice Lilly Pad pond near it too.
Right next door to beautiful Pleasant Valley.

It's about the experience and memories...
Jon is right... too hard to pick ...

Now get in the woods boy

This is a shot taken at Table Lake in its (note no ' ) ten minutes of the year that it's (note ' ) not a hot, dry, bug infested, and inhospitable hellhole. The only place in the park that meets those specs. And I'm easy to please.

Perhaps from Smedberg all the way to Table Lake?
Awww... cmon... that's only about 12 miles.
And you were never suppose to bad mouth Table Lake anymore anyway!

or
"What is your Favorite Place in the Park to take your Globally Warmed Butt?"

"What is your Favorite Place in the Park you can NOT see from Patterson?"

No one could deny the valley itself has some of the most impressive set of features on the planet and views from many locations are World Class. For instance Tunnel View or above at Glacier Point. Unfortunately many of those views are also rather crowded with people. One of my favorite valley locations that is also certain to be free of others though not the traffic noise is about the big talus of the Rock Slides. Great views of the west end of the valley including El Capitan and Bridalveil.

I've also backpacked quite alot in the park though there are some large zones I haven't visited. Favorite viewpoint is Wildcat Point. Favorite lake in early summer is Vernon Lake.

I am SURE that they filmed that scene from the (I think) 4th book where Harry is next to a lake that looks EXACTLY like this one (blue fog et al) and he see's his father on the other side and believes that it is he who is projecting the protective Stag (when its really Harry all along, but I digress...)

Let's just say I was pretty surprised to see so many people at Mattie.
Ended up hoofing it to Virginia on that day instead of staying there...
I figured there might be a use trail but later found out that this
is one spot xcountry that horses are allowed. So it's quite a worn trail...
