The Vernal Fall Comfort Station will open for the season on Friday, April 10. The drinking fountain will be turned on as soon as night time temperatures remain above freezing. The composting toilets at Emerald Pool, Nevada Fall, and Little Yosemite Valley remain open all year.

If you scan the facility descriptions for campsites on Recreation.gov, "comfort station" is often the code they've got for bathrooms with running water. The alternative seems to be "vault toilet" for campgrounds without running water but with outhouses. I guess "pit toilet" or "outhouse" just doesn't cut it any more.

"Comfort station" actually has a Wikipedia article (as well as a slang definition I won't get into here). They define it as an outhouse.

Outside the US, to say "Bathroom" is a very descriptive term that may get you an answer of "NO!" if you pose your question of general facilities in this fashion. Foreign language is far more specific and far more descriptive than english(a language that only has ONE way to say I love you, while Italian has at least five....but I digress)

btw.. on the way down from Clark Pt. someone was cooking bacon... (no kidding)
we smelled the delicious smell of bacon as we walked by the comfy station
(we took the horse trail down) (and NO we did not poop on the trail!)

The turkish toilet (#8) looks quite challenging.

The most memorable commodes I have "seen" have been some of the backcountry spots in Glacier National Park where the toilet seat is without enclosure in the middle of a field usually surrounded by mind-boggling scenery (better than a magazine!). Bears seem to give some outhouses a rough time so they stopped building them in certain locations.

I wonder how the sewage for Vernal Falls Comfort Station is managed. As delicate and likely to offend the senses as this topic is, it is actually a very important issue for backcountry use. Drainfields for sewage treatment with septic tanks do not work well in the rocky soil of higher elevations. The old fashion outhouse represents a technical challenge to dig as well. Glacier Park spent in the vicinity of one million to build a complex composing toilet at Sperry Chalet only to find that the length of summer and technical details made it almost unmanageable and poorly workable. I think they are now taking the human scat out by helicopter (see below). How is the above ground Lower Yosemite Valley composing toilet working? Apparently the "compost" still need to be hauled out by mule?
