New fire start in Yellowstone National Park

  • Smoke from the lightning-ignited Folsom Fire may be visible from the Grand Loop Road between Mammoth Hot Springs and Tower-Roosevelt.
  • The Folsom Fire is currently 0.1 acres in size.
  • The fire is located within the 1988 North Fork Fire scar, in the headwaters of Blacktail Deer Creek on the Blacktail Deer Plateau.
  • The fire was spotted during a reconnaissance flight on the way to the Shoshone National Forest on Saturday, August 4.
  • During the same flight, the Hayden Fire was observed and has been declared out.
  • The Folsom Fire does not pose a threat to park visitors: fire staff will monitor it.
  • Public and firefighter safety is the first priority for park managers.
  • All roads leading into and through the park are open.
  • There are currently two fires burning in Yellowstone National Park.
