<HTML>Yosemite National Park Seeks Public Input for Wilderness Suitability Assessment- McCauley Ranch & Crocker Ridge
Yosemite National Park is assessing two land additions to determine if they are suitable to be recommended for Wilderness designation.
The first unit is the "McCauley Ranch Addition." It is a former working ranch consisting of 185 acres bordering the Stanislaus National Forest, located approximately 1/4 mile southwest of Foresta. This area is bisected by a road and utilities and is separated by nearly 2 miles from Yosemite's designated Wilderness area.
The second unit is 253 acres known as the "Crocker Ridge Addition," located along the park western boundary south of the Big Oak Flat Entrance Station. This parcel contains a segment of the Big Oak Flat Road. It was added to the park so that the road would be entirely within the park rather than going in and out of National Forest lands. It is separated from Yosemite's Wilderness by approximately 2/3 of a mile.
Both parcels will be evaluated according to whether or not they meet the criteria established by the 1964 Wilderness Act and further clarified by National Park Service policies.
The suitability assessment is a factual determination to establish if these areas meet the following criteria: 1) undeveloped or roadless, 2) 5,000 acres or more in size, 3) of sufficient size to make management as wilderness practicable.
The assessment also evaluates the previous actions and impacts of humans, whether or not they retain a primeval character, the presence or lack of opportunities for solitude or primitive recreation, and the possible existence of any significant natural, educational, or historic values. If the factual determination finds that these areas do not meet these criteria, the wilderness review process ends. Neither of these parcels has been previously evaluated.

Yosemite National Park will be holding public open houses on current planning and management issues. The first of these will be on June 26 and 29th, 2002, in the Yosemite Valley Visitor Center East Auditorium. Representatives of the suitability assessment team will be on hand to answer questions and site visits will be conducted on both of those days. Meet in the auditorium at 3:00pm.</HTML>
