Four Mile Trail
April 20, 2009 07:45PM
Hello,
I am visiting Yosemite May 10-16. I noticed that Glacier Point Road may be opening up early this year (tentatively April 24th). Does that mean that the 4 mile trail will be accessible at that time as well, or will trail conditions still not be safe enough? If not, is the 4 mile trail usually open by mid May? I would really love to do this hike up to Glacier Point but I could not find any information regarding previous opening dates for the trail in past years.

The Four Mile Trail is always the last to open. There's an avalanche chute above Union Point that remains dangerous. So while the trail might open by then, I wouldn't count on it.

Well it better be open by May 30th, because this is the second year I'm trying to hike that trail and I don't want to be screwed again...

I'll just hop over the gates and then blast my boombox on the way up...

I took the liberty of reproducing Frank Furter's quote here (in case you haven't been paying attention):

When the Aliens arrive a few thousand years from now, they are going to wonder what was up with Bee and all the references to the El Capitan trail. I hope they laugh as hard as I do. Eeek's original post was the best, but The Beaks timing was pretty good too...

The upper section holds it's snow a long time- I've turned back 2/3rds of the way up in early May. There's noone there to tell you NOT to go- bring Yaktrax and poles just in case.
