Grand Canyon of tuolumne hike
January 11, 2019 04:00PM
Have a group of 4 planning a trip down from TM GA pass through to white wolf. June 30.
Just wondering if any of the three(of four)bridges are up? Any thoughts on difficultly of river crossings at end of June . I'm worried, thinking we may need security ropes or something.
Have a pretty experienced river guy coming along but know that river crossings that early can be deadly. Anyone been down or up that trail last year?
Is it possible to stay on the north (trail) side of river to get to glen aulin?

Pate valley is the bridge of concern. NPS said it's scheduled for repairs this year but it most likely won't be repaired until after July. There is also a YouTube video of the bridge condition from a couple years ago. Obviously it's gotten worse since the video. Anyone been across or by that bridge last year? A lot will depend on the snow yet to fall and the melt off. Just curious how people have crossed down there. I'm guessing the first bridge above Tuolumne falls is still out. Suggestions welcome for that one also.

The bridges along the PCT route between Tuolumne Meadows and Glen Aulin were all in place and in good shape last summer. The bridge over Conness Creek leading into the High Sierra Camp and backpacker camp at Glen Aulin is out, but unless you were planning to camp there that shouldn't be an issue.

NPS update from wilderness permit application-
We're reaching out to you in regards to your recent permit application to hike the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne River. Before issuing a permit for the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne, we want to make sure that hikers are aware that the Pate Valley bridge is currently heavily damaged from flooding in 2017. From our last report, there is only one intact stringer beam that connects the two banks. The NPS has deemed this unsafe to cross, and recommends against it. This means that you would have the cross the Tuolumne River at this point. We wouldn't expect the river to be passable at the end of June, this usually doesn't become the case till closer to August on an average snowpack year. This means that there is a chance that you'll have to turn around at Pate Valley, and return to your entry trailhead.

To make sure that you have all of the information: hikers have crossed the remaining stringer that is in place in the past two seasons. There is a video of someone crossing it in 2017 on YouTube. However, be warned that as of September 2018, the bridge no longer has any of the partial railings seen in that video, and is just the remaining stringers (1 intact, 2 damaged). The other important info is that the NPS does have plans on replacing the bridge in 2019. There isn't currently a proposed date for that, but during construction of the new bridge, crossing it will not be an option for a short window. Finally, there's always a chance that those final pieces of the bridge will receive further damage during this spring melt.

Yup, that pretty much is it. If not comfortable with this suggest alternate plans - or turn around.

I had a GA pass thru permit for June 27 in 2017. Tioga Pass didn't open until June 29.

My neighbor walked in from the pass gate a few days earlier than that and he couldn't get past Glen Aulin HSC. (Flooding on either side of the bridge.)
