NPS update from wilderness permit application-
We're reaching out to you in regards to your recent permit application to hike the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne River. Before issuing a permit for the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne, we want to make sure that hikers are aware that the Pate Valley bridge is currently heavily damaged from flooding in 2017. From our last report, there is only one intact stringer beam that connects the two banks. The NPS has deemed this unsafe to cross, and recommends against it. This means that you would have the cross the Tuolumne River at this point. We wouldn't expect the river to be passable at the end of June, this usually doesn't become the case till closer to August on an average snowpack year. This means that there is a chance that you'll have to turn around at Pate Valley, and return to your entry trailhead.
To make sure that you have all of the information: hikers have crossed the remaining stringer that is in place in the past two seasons. There is a video of someone crossing it in 2017 on YouTube. However, be warned that as of September 2018, the bridge no longer has any of the partial railings seen in that video, and is just the remaining stringers (1 intact, 2 damaged). The other important info is that the NPS does have plans on replacing the bridge in 2019. There isn't currently a proposed date for that, but during construction of the new bridge, crossing it will not be an option for a short window. Finally, there's always a chance that those final pieces of the bridge will receive further damage during this spring melt.
