Hiking around Glacier Point Road Week of June 24
June 05, 2019 03:33AM
Good Morning-
With the increase in snowfall at higher elevations, I'm looking into plan "B" and "C" to hopefully change my permit from the ten lakes area to some destinations off of Glacier Point road. This seems to be at lower elevations with better chances for backpacking.

McGurk meadow- How would it be using that area as a base camp, and hiking east/west to see the sights over a day or two (Dewey point/ Glacier point etc)

Ostrander area- Hiking out to the crescent lake area around hart lake and back around Illiloute creek.

Any thoughts??

Thank you!

Ostrander will have snow.

You'd have to cross Chilnualna to get to Crescent.
Unless you resourceful … (I'm putting this here for the nit pickers
since I'm assuming you'd take all trail from the south and loop around
up and over BV Pass) (which is only what makes sense)
(and you only mentioned Ostrander b/c it's in the middle of it all)

You'd go over 10K to go over BV Pass.

I wouldn't hike to Glacier Point from Dewey.

I avoid Taft in season. My personal pref...

Where exactly you gonna camp? why?

Best of luck

(i.e. said it better than I can w/r to Ten Lakes)

Thanks for the pointers/links, I would have totally missed it as I don't check the nps site that much.
Can't agree more with all the tips there, especially the one about what equipment to bring.

I secured a Permit for the same dates to head in and out at McGurk Meadow. I was looking for something lower elevation that had opening at the trailheads. I was planning on camping somewhere south of dewy staying out of the mud/meadows.

I'm really grasping at straws here trying to find a snow free place in teh park for my family to get out for 2 and half days

Help please-
