With such a happy smiling face, you must have snapped this photo right after Jim finished enjoying one of your delicious Twinkies (or was it a Cloud Cake?).

Thanks for the photos. Glad you still had clear skies at times at least on some parts of your trip.

Nope,
I had to wait until day 6 at Horse Creek Pass before I earned my Twinkie. It was the best Twinkie ever made on the planet! Chick-on ate the Cloud Cake.

The rest of the crew would be in this picture if we were not lying down waiting for chick-on's return. We would still be a tough find, even with the zoom feature.

Google turned this up...

George Wright Society Conference
Just a few months later on August 28, 1944, another USAAF Douglas P-70 (P-70B) from
Hammer Field crashed into the summit of Quarry Peak, 15 miles west of Mono Lake. Three air-
men were killed in the accident. The cause of the crash was never determined (Mireles 2006).
Wreckage was scattered over a 500 foot area, and is still in place (Macha and Jordan 2002).

I asked a pilot-instructor coworker about this stuff. He said that back in the WW-II era the military had people piloting very challenging planes on, say, 70 hours flight time, when today 1000 or more hours would be required.

Plus, from the supplied link, it seems to me that weather forecasting was somewhat more challenged then than now. And even now west coast forecasts suffer from a lack of data to initialize weather models, given the somewhat large nearby ocean and lack of investment in sea buoys.

I did this route with my Boy Scout troop as well. A nice hidden corner of Yosemite.
