A rule of thumb that I have is... if I find a balloon I pretty much can guarantee it's gonna be a great trip.
This one was a two ballooner. Had a bunch of those last year along with a rare triple. Weekend before was a single.

only found a weather balloon... it had a contact this... OD did... and they never responded

It's very much hands-on-rock in some places. Don't get the impression that it's a single ledge.

I quit doing it when I turned 60. There are longer but easier ways to get to the Diving Board. Of course, it you are headed for Snake Dike, then you should be comfortable with this stuff...

Dat looks like my pix. (not a problem)

It's about 6 inches in places I would say.... if you look closely at that zoom...
you'll see two places where I drew it vertical. Those are 2 of the stickler
places where you have to class 3 it. between the 2 also there is one little
spot where you have to downclimb just a bit. The trace is spot on....

I've taken my pack to and fro on this route... but I wouldn't take many others.
There is a very simple way up that is no exposure.

IMO ... and I'm pretty sure posted this elsewhere... the easiest route is
via LYV / Lost Lake / Shrubby up

Great picture thanks (Chick-On and Wherever).

I'm not sure I will ever be there before a Snake Dike trip. The rest of my family wasn't really comfortable with the "ledge" at the top of Yosemite Falls taking you from top of the trail and the rails down to the summertime pools and water outflow. I love the sleeping arrangements there.

My wife is a bit more subtle. She just makes me carry everything in my backpack.
Getting her a really small lightweight backpack has been killing me.

Actually, having an athletic background, I was the one always carrying other people's stuff (especially for my sister; it was the only way that I could get her to go hiking)

Those aren't rocks... those are training features of the pack.

Seriously though... every time I ask her to carry me... she refuses...

(I'm not kidding... my pack was 40lbs... hers was 20lbs last trip w/her)
(and she royally kicked my booty... I had to call 'no mas')

Hi all. Been out of it for some time. Mom died Feb. 25, life rough before and very busy after. Basilbop has posted some of what we've been up to..

But in trying to catch up on site, had to stop to comment on this one. I was just at REI yesterday and was looking at this new Exos 58. I love my "first edition" one and was interested in the changes they made. I want to hear what you both think about this pack! If anyone has the new pack, or even better - had the old pack and now has the new one, would love to hear about it.

Very cool. My wife is a trooper, but I do what I can to keep her pack light. The problem is, I take a bunch of the heavy stuff and then she just refills her pack with sketching and art supplies and she's right back where she started.

On the third day he will whine. I finally realized he was just going because I wanted to go. After he "closed" the entire Grand Canyon as a "revegetation area" after an eight day trip, I realized I would be better if I hiked with a friend. Then, when the friends started annoying me, I realized that sometimes it's nice to just go.

He is happy to look at my pictures and listen to my stories when I get home. I know he doesn't miss carrying the pack. For the record he never carried my stuff.

My wife has gone with me before. However, she isn't into hiking all that much, she just loves the outdoors. It just means I need easier trips. grinning smiley And I carry as much as possible. It helps me get more of the trip I want.

Basilbop and I backpack as a couple as often as we can. We've been hiking together and backpacking for over two decades now. I'd say over the past 10 years, given schedules (both) and injuries (mine), we've each had either solo trips or trips with other friends. Because of my injuries/schedule Basilbop has gone without me more than I've gone without him. And I find it VERY HARD to be left behind! crying When we started backpacking, we were very egalitarian, carrying weight proportional to our bodyweight. We've modified that a bit and now we each carry what our relative strength at the time allows. We try to go as light as possible, but I have some "luxuries" (warmer quilt, "The Stick"winking smiley, and I often carry extra cameras/lenses for Basilbop as well. We both carry more than we used to, but it's also easier for us now. When we finished the JMT together in 2010, we weighed our packs at the end, it turned out my pack was a pound or so heavier than Basilbop's! Have to say my ego liked that.

On one of our trips last summer, I really mangled my back on the morning of the second day--badly enough to make it darn hard to move...

And so we gave some hard thoughts about what to do next. One option was for her to try and carry both of our packs...and hoping that I could crawl along somehow to get us back to trailhead.

Another option, which turned out to be more attractive, was for me to lie down and do a series of back exercises that sloooowwwly began to relax the spasms.

And in the end, we decided to continue with the hike for another 40 miles or so.

The joys of backpacking with age!

Anywho. Not to give you tooooo hard a time.... but it's Wilma Lake. Not Wilmer.
Some Brit screwed up the translation / tranposition / signation / designation.
Turn your GPS on british... and you'll quickly see how it happened.

Z wife and I see couples every so often. Just saw a nice couple on our last
trip together and chatted with them for a bit. But typically we rarely see anyone
for most of the days we are out together. So easy to get away from everyone.

bzw... I backpack with the aged quite often. tongue sticking out smiley

I always backpack with my boyfriend/domestic partner Steve and would be very disappointed if I wasn't included. We each carry our own clothing, toiletries, etc and divvy up the general gear. We'll split the tent up and one of us will carry the tent and fly, the other the poles. I try not to bring anything extraneous (I can't imagine bringing art supplies!) I usually bring a point-and-shoot camera but I think next trip he'll attempt to bring the SLR, which will significantly heavy up his load, meaning I'll probably get stuck carrying more other items...wink

It can also cause a sore neck if you use the strap to carry it.

I bring my DSLR and usually a couple of lenses (and a mini tripod). I use this waist clip to carry my camera. I run my waist strap stabilizer through it (back towards my hip), and even keep the camera in a neoprene case to protect it a little. It allows me to access the camera quickly and often, but leaves my hands free for scrambling, hiking poles, etc. Trust Eeek when he says using the strap will cause a sore neck.

Here's another suggestion. Buy a Cotton Carrier and place it on your chest. I wear one with my 70-200 attached but....I'm usually on flat terrain.

Do you happen to know if they make any 'Cotton Carriers' or holsters that use the same attaching mechanism as a tripod? I would really like not having to switch out attachments between a holster and tripod mount. (Does this make sense?)

My hubby could score points with the wifie if he'd go backpacking with me. We haven't been since 2010. But it may not be in the cards in the future...

On that trip I carried more weight than him and on the JMT in 2008, we carried equal (and heavy) packs. When we wuz young'uns, he did carry more of the weight than I. ( My cameras weighed a lot more then than nowadays too.)

As far as couples...we had backpacked together for 31 years.



And, as for the camera strap around the neck...if you are used to carrying your camera bag in that manner, it will be fine backpacking too.

I always hike with my wife...and eleven year old son. We just bought him a new tent and are kicking him out of ours! We also just added an adopted Siberian Husky, so our trips to the park will be limited. I am really looking forward to exploring some of the areas outside the park. I would love to find somewhere like Ten Lakes but without the crowds, I am sure it is wishful thinking but I have plenty of time to look!
